Age of majority

The age of majority is the threshold of legal adulthood as recognized or declared in law. It is the moment when minors cease to be considered such and assume legal control over their persons, actions, and decisions, thus terminating the control and legal responsibilities of their parents or guardian over them. Most countries set the age of majority at 18, but some jurisdictions have a higher age and others lower. The word majority here refers to having greater years and being of full age as opposed to minority, the state of being a minor. The law in a given jurisdiction may not actually use the term "age of majority". The term typically refers to a collection of laws bestowing the status of adulthood. Those under the age of majority are referred to as minors and may be legally denied certain privileges or rights (e.g. the right to vote, buy alcohol, marry, sign a binding contract).

Age of majority should not be confused with the age of maturity, age of sexual consent, marriageable age, school-leaving age, drinking age, driving age, voting age, smoking age, gambling age, etc., which each may be independent of and set at a different age from the age of majority.

Examples of use of age of majority
1. We do not on reaching the age of majority make a formal declaration of the things the world may be getting wrong about us and ought to know.
2. I would NEVER allow my children to swear such an oath either before they reached the age of majority. – Bob Christie, Fife, Scotland I wouldn‘t mind swearing allegiance to the Queen, but to King Charles?
3. Permission to reprint/republish Now, like a child who has reached the legal age of majority, Iraq‘s government must make choices and be held accountable, even if its military and police still cannot yet operate without foreign assistance and even if militants have been killing many Iraqi civilians.
4. That we allow any marriage of children dates back to 1'2', when the minimum legal marriageable age was set at 16 with parental consent or at the age of majority without it (at the time this was 21; since 1'6' it has been 18). There is, therefore, a two–year window where parental discretion determines whether or not the marriage takes place of someone who is still legally a child.
5. "The girls having reached the age of discretion had of their own volition accompanied the men of their choice," the court had said, noting that "evidence suggested that the initiative came from them and they got married of their own accord and were desirous of living with their respective husbands". Quoting from the 1'65 apex court verdict in S Varadrajan vs State of Madras, it had said when a girl, who though a minor had attained the age of discretion and was on the verge of attaining the age of majority, accompanied a man with the desire of being his wife, the man cannot be held guilty of kidnapping as "the law does not cast upon him the duty of taking her back to her father‘s house or even of telling her not to accompany him".
